Very British: Beatles, Belfast and black tea

Travemünde is a relaxed Baltic Sea resort and a port for Scandinavian ferries. Seafood restaurants dot the banks of the Trave River as well as the Strandpromenade overlooking Travemünde Beach and the Bay of Lübeck, and stalls sell fish sandwiches at the Fishermen’s harbor. The Alter Leuchtturm is a brick lighthouse from 1539 housing a maritime museum, and the 4-masted sailing ship Passat is open for guided tours.

La résistance pris fin en 1746 lorsque Bonnie Prince Charlie, lors d’une triste mais héroïque tentative de reprendre le trône, fut défait durant la bataille de Culloden. Celle-ci changea la structure sociale des Highlands pour toujours. Des clans très puissants furent désarmés; pendant de nombreuses années le port du kilt fut interdit car celui-ci était considéré comme un symbole de fierté écossaise. L’Ecosse fut en fin de compte gouvernée depuis Londres.

Invergordon est le port d’Inverness, capitale des Highlands écossais et se trouve au croisement de plusieurs routes. Au fil des siècles, Inverness a souvent été le foyer principal des affrontements entre les chefs des Highlands et la Couronne. Aujourd’hui, la ville est une attraction touristique populaire ainsi qu’un lieu de rassemblement pour les clans de la région environnante. Plusieurs des événements traditionnels écossais y ont lieu chaque été, notamment les Jeux des Highlands et les concours de chiens de moutons.

Invergordon est également un bon point de départ pour des excursions vers de nombreuses attractions de la région, comme par exemple le champ de bataille de Culloden, le Loch Ness, les villages de Tain and Cromarty, des châteaux et les vieilles distilleries de whisky. L’économie locale repose en grande partie sur le tourisme, en plus de la pêche et de l’agriculture.

Portree is the largest town on, and capital of, the Isle of Skye in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. It is the location for the only secondary school on the island, Portree High School. Public transport services are limited to buses. Portree has a harbour, fringed by cliffs, with a pier designed by Thomas Telford.

Belfast is Northern Ireland’s capital. It was the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, which famously struck an iceberg and sunk in 1912. This legacy is recalled in the renovated dockyards’ Titanic Quarter, which includes the Titanic Belfast, an aluminium-clad museum reminiscent of a ship’s hull, as well as shipbuilder Harland & Wolff’s Drawing Offices and the Titanic Slipways, which now host open-air concerts.

Liverpool is a maritime city in northwest England, where the River Mersey meets the Irish Sea. A key trade and migration port from the 18th to the early 20th centuries, it’s also, famously, the hometown of The Beatles. Ferries cruise the waterfront, where the iconic mercantile buildings known as the « Three Graces » – Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building and Port of Liverpool Building – stand on the Pier Head.

Fishguard is a coastal town in Pembrokeshire, Wales, with a population of 3,419 in 2011; the community of Fishguard and Goodwick had a population of 5,407. Modern Fishguard consists of two parts, Lower Fishguard and the « Main Town ». Fishguard and Goodwick are twin towns with a joint Town Council.

Fowey is a small town, civil parish and cargo port at the mouth of the River Fowey in south Cornwall, England, United Kingdom.

Portsmouth is a port city and naval base on England’s south coast, mostly spread across Portsea Island. It’s known for its maritime heritage and Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The dockyard is home to the interactive National Museum of the Royal Navy, the wooden warship HMS Victory, where Nelson died in the Battle of Trafalgar, and HMS Warrior 1860. The Tudor ship Mary Rose is also conserved in a dockyard museum.

Hamburg, a major port city in northern Germany, is connected to the North Sea by the Elbe River. It’s crossed by hundreds of canals, and also contains large areas of parkland. Near its core, Inner Alster lake is dotted with boats and surrounded by cafes. The city’s central Jungfernstieg boulevard connects the Neustadt (new town) with the Altstadt (old town), home to landmarks like 18th-century St. Michael’s Church.
