The port town of Sabang is a little slice of beach and jungle paradise on the island of Pulau Weh (also known locally as Sabang). In fact, even though it’s just 29 miles across, with its variety of landscapes, climates, and attractions, Gran Canaria is sometimes referred to as a “Miniature Continent”, and a third of the island under protection as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The south features sunny resort communities, the bird sanctuary of Palmisos Park, and Maspalomas (renowned for its beaches, sand dunes, and lighthouse), while the east has the fishing village of Puerto de Mogan, otherwise known as “Little Venice” due to its many canals.

Agadir, das am Fuße des Atlasgebirges liegt, ist von den fruchtbaren Ebenen des Souss-Tals umgeben. Von dieser sonnigen und kosmopolitischen Stadt, in der moderne Architektur auf die Reste eines Kolonialhafens trifft, war nach einem Erdbeben 1960 nicht mehr viel übrig war. Heute ist Agadir einer der weltweit wichtigsten Sardinenfischereihäfen der Welt und ein wichtiges Handelszentrum für den Export von Zitrusfrüchten. Die Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts neu erbauten modernen Gebäude vermischen sich mit weiß getünchten Gebäuden entlang breiter, französisch inspirierter Boulevards, die von üppigen Parklandschaften und Mimosenbäumen gesäumt sind. Die größten Stars von Agadir sind jedoch die schönen einsamen Strandabschnitte, die Touristen aus der ganzen Welt an die Küste dieses nordafrikanischen Urlaubsziels locken.

Das heutige Casablanca bewahrt immer noch die Atmosphäre und Geschichte von längst vergangenen Zeiten und ist doch eine moderne Stadt. Casablanca, ungebändigt und doch einladen, ist nach wie vor ein beliebtes Urlaubsziel. Der hoch aufragende Felsen von Gibraltar ist ein Anblick, den Sie nie wieder vergessen werden. Mit Blick auf die Mündung des Mittelmeers von einer Höhe von 426 Metern aus ist dieser eine von der Natur geschaffene Festung, die ideal gelegen ist, um den gesamten Seeverkehr zwischen dem Mittelmeer und dem Atlantik zu kontrollieren. Diese nur rund 5 Kilometer lange und eineinhalb Kilometer breite Halbinsel am spanischen Festland ragt in die Straße von Gibraltar hinein, die Kontinentaleuropa von Nordafrika trennt. Die Entfernung beträgt nicht viel mehr als 20 Kilometer. Das für den Rest von Europa äußerst untypische Wahrzeichen der Halbinsel sind die hier lebenden Primaten. Gruppen von halbwilden und merkwürdig schwanzlosen Berberaffen haben sich in den etwas höheren Regionen des Felsens niedergelassen.

Málaga ist die lebendige Hauptstadt der Costa del Sol, die zum einen berühmt ist für ihre Strände und das milde Klima, zum anderen aber auch Ihr Tor ist zu Andalusien mit seinem maurischen architektonischen Erbe. Die Alcazaba der Stadt, eine Zitadelle aus dem 11. Jahrhundert in majestätischer Pracht und mit Blick auf die afrikanische Küste, ist ein schönes Beispiel dafür. Die Festung enthält drei prächtige Paläste und anmutige Gärten mit reich verzierten Brunnen. Neben ihrem reichen kulturellen Erbe sind Malagueños aber auch sehr stolz auf ihre berühmtesten Bürger – Pablo Picasso, für den es hier ein Museum gibt und den Schauspieler Antonio Banderas, dem (bislang) noch kein Denkmal gesetzt wurde.

Der historische Stadtkern ist so voll von schönen Plätzen, imposanten Palästen, prächtigen Kirchen und Museen mit einer solchen Fülle an epochalen Kunstwerken, dass ein Kunstliebhaber schier weinen möchte vor Freude. Die Liste der berühmten Namen, die mit Florenz verbunden sind, ist beinahe endlos und umwerfend: Botticelli, Dante, Da Vinci, Michelangelo und Galileo sind nur die bekanntesten davon. Der ein oder andere schillernde, faszinierende oder dunkle Charakter wiederum genoss einen zweifelhaften Ruf: so etwa Machiavelli oder der katholische Extremist Savonarola mit seinem „Fegefeuer der Eitelkeiten“. Viele Jahre lang wurde Florenz von der mächtigen Medici-Familie regiert. Sie förderte die Künste, finanzierte das Papsttum und brachte insgesamt sechs Könige und zwei Päpste hervor.

Im pulsierenden Barcelona dreht sich alles um Architektur – von den prächtigen mittelalterlichen Gebäuden des Gotischen Viertels bis zu den Manifestationen der modernistischen Bewegung, die vor allem durch die Arbeit von Antoni Gaudi geprägt ist. Obwohl seine Materialien Stein und Metall waren, zeichneten sich seine Werke durch organische, lebendige Formen voller Kurven, Wirbel und Farben aus.
