Von Singapur nach Laem Chabang (Bangkok)

Singapur ist eine fast diamantenförmige Insel, die am Ende der malaysischen Halbinsel zu finden ist. Es kann mit einer strategisch günstigen Lage für die Schifffahrt an der kürzesten Meeresverbindung zwischen dem Indischen Ozean und dem Südchinesischen Meer aufwarten. Die schmale Meerenge von Johor teilt Singapur von Malaysia, aber die beiden sind durch einen Damm, der nicht einmal 1,5 Kilometer lang ist, verbunden.

Langkawi ist die wichtigste Insel in einer Gruppe bestehend aus 104 Inseln, die zusammen das Langkawi Archipel formen, das dort liegt, wo die Straße von Melaka auf die Gewässer des Andamanischen Meeres treffen. Langkawi Island, das einst ein Rückzugsort für Piraten war, war bis zum Jahre 1987, als es ein duty-free Hafen wurde, ein wohl gehütetes Geheimnis. Seit dem hat das Errichten modernsten Komforts ein idyllisches Tor nach Malaysia geschaffen. Seine natürliche Schönheit und seine eindrucksvolle Vergangenheit haben Langkawi zu einer Schatztruhe für Besucher gemacht, die es zu erforschen gilt. Der Name stammt von den malaiischen Worten Lang, einem braunen Adler, und Kawi, einem regionalen Manganstein.

Penang ist das nördliche Tor nach Malaysia und die älteste britische Siedlung des Landes. In der touristischen Industrie ist Penang schon lange als „die Perle des Orients” bekannt. Als die Briten im Jahre 1786 unter Kapitän Francis Light die Herrschaft übernahmen, haben sie die Insel in dichte Dschungel gehüllt und bis auf eine handvoll malaiischer Fischer und einiger Piraten unbewohnt vorfinden können. Die kleine Stadt, die auf Grund von George III (dem Prince of Wales) Georgetown genannt wurde, konnte sich um das Camp herum, das neben dem Hafen zu finden war, entwickeln. Viele Einwanderer wurden von dem Hafen, der zu der Zeit zum freien Hafen erklärt wurde, angezogen und die Insel wurde bald zu einem kulturellen Schmelztiegel mit einem eklektischen Mix aus verschiedensten Rassen und Religionen aus Ost und West. Bis zum Jahre 1789 hatte Georgetown eine Einwohnerzahl von etwa 5,000 erreichen können. Bis zum Ende der darauffolgenden Dekade konnte sich diese verdoppeln.

It’s hard to leave the intoxicating fizz of the city behind, but the journey north to Ayutthaya is an incredible voyage, where you can see the extraordinary ruins of the former capital Kingdom of Siam, which was destroyed in 1350.
